Bat Themed Learning Games

Bats are fascinating creatures and make a great study this time of year…or any time really! We LOVE to study about Bats with our students and also love the theme of bats so we created a series of learning games that will have your students asking to play over and over again.

One important thing to remember when using games with your students is that it MUST be a positive experience or they won’t want to engage in that activity. The best way we’ve found is to ensure the student is successful when answering (or reading the word or whatever the skill being practiced). Either an adult assists at the game center or you can train your students to “help” a student if they encounter a difficult word etc. The player can say, “I need help with this word” and the adult or child helper can read it for them. The player then reads the word themselves and moves ahead on the path or keeps the card or whatever the result of a successful answer is. The struggling player should not be penalized for not knowing the answer. Most games have a “natural” winning aspect to them that is not reliant on the skill (such as the roll of the die, number of cards drawn, placement of cover-ups/cubes etc.). The goal is that students will want to play the game and PRACTICE the skill …probably not even realizing that they are learning! Here are some of our favorite games all based around a Bat theme!

Vampire Bats Tic-Tac-Toe

A simple game like Tic-Tac-Toe can become a learning game! Make learning CVC and CVCe words easy by turning over a card and placing your cover-up or Unifix cube on the word on the game mat! Three in a row and you’ve won! Of course you play again and again all the time practicing and practicing the words over and over. Bats BUMPER

Bats BUMPER is another favorite game that provides loads of practice. Based on the popular Math Game called BUMP, we adapted it to practice words and called it BUMPER. It can be super easy prep with you print the game mats and WORD Spinners rather than the provided cards. Teachers love this game whenever we show it to them. So much fun! Happy Bats Roll & Read CVC Word Building

Do your students need help reading CVC words? This Word Building game practices real and nonsense words. Students roll a die 3 times and record the 3 letters then read their newly created word. Now they decide whether it formed a real or nonsense word! You’d be surprised what words students are convinced are real!
